He Prioritized Violent Crime
 
  • District Attorney Colom’s office has made punishing violent criminals his NUMBER 1 Agenda. His office has an over 95% conviction rate after indictment and an over 85% conviction rate on jury trials. 

  • District Attorney Colom has personally delivered convictions for the worst crimes, leading the prosecution in 26 trials with 24 guilty verdicts, including Terry Hill for the rape and kidnapping of a MS State student, Shundray Johnson for double homicides in Clay County, Lydia Martinez for the murder of her son in law, William Chisholm for the murder of his ex-girlfriend at the Starkville Walmart, Clark Allen, Jr. for the capital murder in Artesia, and Kenny Armistad for the murder of Frank Edwards, Jr.

  • Helped solve and prosecute a record number of cold cases, including conviction of Michael Devaughn for the 1990 Labor Day murder and rape in Starkville, David Murry for the 1996 murder of Mack Fowler, and the 2003 rape and attempted murder of Nashedra Strong-Clay in West Point, MS.

  • Of the 55 jury trials conducted during his time as DA, ZERO have been reversed by reviewing courts, meaning Mr. Colom’s office has been able to obtain convictions against criminals without violating rights or due process

 

He helped first time, Non-Violent Offenders become taxpayers rather than tax burdens
 
  • Mr. Colom delivered on his commitment to help first time, non-violent offenders get the help they need to be taxpayers rather than tax burdens. Through his pretrial diversion program, his office has supported drug rehabilitation services, helped people get their GEDs, and help them get jobs. The program has been praised by participants and by the local press.

  • Mr. Colom also support the significant expansion of the 16th Circuit Court’s Drug Court program, which also helps drug addicts get the rehab services and monitoring they need to get their lives on the right track.

 

He expanded services for Victims of Crimes  
 
  • Provided a first in the State grievance counseling program for survivors of violent crime to help them recover from the trauma of violence.

  • Started first in the State tree planting memorial service for loved ones lost to gun violence.

  • Prioritized restitution for victims of financial crimes
